Company of fools by Debra Ellis

Set in the Middle Ages in a Benedictine monastery in France, A Company of Fools deals mostly with the effects of the plague on society.  It is told in the first person by choirboy Henri, who sees and tells of the greed, power, fear and death intertwined with the arrival of the plague.  When a new boy, Micah arrives, Henri sees the possibilities that life could hold for him.  Never out of trouble, Micah leads Henri into new adventures that opens up the world for him.
